The SAMS team at the Charles Sadron Institute, led by Professor Nicolas Giuseppone, published today, in collaboration with the team of Professor David Leigh at the University of Manchester, an article in the review Nature. In this work, the researchers demonstrate that a simple molecular catalyst can use a chiral chemical fuel to produce directional mechanical work that can be used up to the macroscopic scale. This remarkable finding provides an expected response to a debate that has animated the scientific community for many years on the understanding of the mode of energy transduction implemented by biological motors within living cells.
